Entrepreneurs are not born, they are made. For some, the spirit of entrepreneurship catches on at an early age and there are so many kid entrepreneurs changing the business landscape more than ever before. It’s clear the world needs more innovators and more entrepreneurs. So if you are a doer and a dreamer get started on your entrepreneurial journey today!
- The time is NOW - There couldn’t be a better time right? Schools and colleges are shut and are likely to be the last to open even after lock-down is over. No one is travelling this summer. You could even ask your parents to share some part of the money they are saving from your annual holiday budget and use it as the seed capital for your new business! So, with time and money in your hands, there just cannot be any excuse to not get started on your entrepreneurial journey right now.
- Don’t just solve a problem… solve your problem – you must have heard this several times that the starting point of a business idea is to identify a problem and find a solution for it. But it’s important for the problem to be your problem. It must be real to you. Only when you are facing it yourself can you understand its complexities in entirety.
- Use your strengths – What are you best at doing? What do you feel most passionate about? That should be at the core of your business. If your business is built around your strength/passion its easier to keep yourself motivated through all the highs and lows this journey will take you through.
- Get Help – You may not know how to do everything yourself just as you start off. List out the areas where you need help and map them to friends, family and people you know who can help you in that area. Don’t hesitate to reach out to people and seek their guidance. Most accomplished people are eager to share their knowledge and give back in which ever way they can – they would only be happy to support a budding entrepreneur.
- Get Inspired – read and watch as many stories of entrepreneurs as you can. Read about successful entrepreneurs like Richard Branson and Ambani who run large business empires. Also read about the journeys of youngsters who dared to start early like Mark Zuckerberg and Ritesh Agarwal. Watch documentaries. Shows like shark tank help you understand the various aspects of the business that you need to focus on.
- Get Educated– maybe you have a great idea, the required skill set, money and support from people around you… but there may be finer nuances of running a business that you don’t know – like finance, marketing, supply chain management etc. Enrol yourself for a course to learn these specific aspects, get specialists in your network to teach you, maybe even do an internship to get hands-on experience.
- Learn to sell – Sell yourself and your business at any opportunity you get. No one call sell your idea better than you. If you think you are not a communicator, learn to become good at it right now. Every interaction you have from now on is a networking opportunity. It could be financer, a partner, a customer, a supplier – an entrepreneur must always be ready to put oneself out there.
- Be committed – Do you see yourself doing this for atleast 5 years? That’s the bare minimum time you will need to give it to reach any level of success. Don’t forget your school / college will start soon and then there will be other important things that will eat into your time. Choose your business wisely so that you continue to have the same level of drive and commitment to make it successful when life throws other priorities at you.
- Be Curious – Ask a lot of questions. Everything happening around you is a learning opportunity. There is no one right way. Be on the lookout for new and better ways to do the same thing differently.
- Be Resilient – Failure and rejections will soon become a reality, its important to train your mind to handle it and move forward. Entrepreneurs need to go out of their comfort zones ever so often. Things may not always happen the way you want or at the speed you want. Staying determined and starting every day with the same enthusiasm as you had on the first day will be the key to survival!
